A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill put forward on recently would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
